1880 Morgan Dollar
The 1880 Morgan Dollar had a mintage of 12,600,000 coins and remains plentiful in supply for collectors. Several die varieties exist for this issue, but the most notable is the “80 over 79″, which were created when dies prepared for use in the prior year were overpunched with the new date. Traces of the digits “79″ can be seen below the “80″.
The Philadelphia Mint struck 1,355 proof 1880 Morgan Dollars this year, which was the highest annual proof coin production for the series.
