1883-O Morgan Dollar

The New Orleans Mint struck 8,725,000 silver dollars carry the 1883 date. For a period of time, relatively few examples of the 1883-O Morgan Dollar were known in uncirculated grades. This changed when a large number of bags were released containing primarily New Orleans minted silver dollars from this era.

This issue is relatively common and affordably priced in grades through gem. Striking quality is known to vary greatly for this issue, allowing the advanced collector to select a sharply struck pieces from amongst the available supply. This is preferably to a weakly struck example of the same grade and enhances the overall appeal of a collection.

Grading company NGC has certified two Proof 1883-O Morgan Dollars, representing one of the examples that branch mint proofs are believed to have been struck. Numismatic tradition states that the proof mintage was 12 pieces, although the status is somewhat disputed. It can be difficult to differentiate a deep mirror proof like circulation strike from a true proof striking.
